Teaching in Higher Ed is one of my favorite podcasts. Today, I listened to the episode “Cultivating Critical AI Literacies,” where Bonni Stachowiak, the host, invited Maha Bali, a professor of practice at the Center for Learning and Teaching at the American University in Cairo. Maha made some intriguing points about AI bias and cultural representation that really resonated with me.
During the conversation, Maha shared personal experiences illustrating how AI systems often misrepresent cultures that are underrepresented in the data they are trained on. For instance, when using AI tools to generate images of Egyptian classrooms, the results were stereotypical and inaccurate. The AI would depict students walking in the desert toward the pyramids, include camels, or use ancient Egyptian symbols—elements that do not reflect modern Egyptian classrooms in bustling cities like Cairo.
She also mentioned how AI tools like ChatGPT can produce erroneous or biased information about non-Western history and culture. When asked about Islamic history or contemporary Egyptian leaders, the AI might mix up historical periods or provide incorrect images. For example, requesting a photo of Muhammad Ali Pasha, a 19th-century Egyptian leader, sometimes yields an image of Muhammad Ali, the American boxer, due to the AI’s reliance on more readily available Western data.
These examples highlight a critical issue: AI systems often reflect the biases present in their training data, which predominantly represents mainstream Western cultures. This isn’t just a technical problem but a reflection of deeper societal disparities.
This made me ponder whether it’s fair to blame AI for these biases or if we should consider the broader societal and political factors that limit the availability of diverse and accurate data. Many cultures are underrepresented in AI training data, not because of a lack of effort or interest, but due to oppressive regimes, censorship, and restrictions on freedom of expression and public photography. These barriers prevent scholars, journalists, and citizens from producing and sharing digital content that could enrich AI’s understanding of diverse cultures.
So, perhaps the issue isn’t just about biased algorithms but also about the unequal representation of cultures in the digital realm. The lack of images, written records, and shared experiences from certain societies directly impacts how AI models perceive and generate content about them.
Is my perspective valid?
I believe it sheds light on a crucial aspect of AI development that often goes unnoticed. But I’m eager to hear your thoughts:
